Summer Jobs Program

ASM Detroit is in the process of setting up a summer jobs referral program. We feel this free program will be valuable to student members at our Michigan universities, and will promote closer ties between our member companies and an important source of local materials talent.

This program will take advantage of the availability of the Internet access provided to college students; our web site will be the central repository for these positions, with printed matter supplementing it as necessary.

If your organization intends to hire summer materials help, please list your opportunities through ASM Detroit. The success of this program depends upon your participation!

If you have any questions, please contact Michael Vinarcik, Young Members/Student Affairs Committee Chairman, at (313) 337-8377 or Michael_Vinarcik@msn.com.

Six members of the Young Member/Student Affairs Committee are supporting the 1998 ESD/SME Future Cities Competition (part of National Engineers Week) by mentoring local schools.

Teams from 50 Michigan schools are competing for a chance to represent Detroit at the national competition. Each group designs a city using SimCity 2000, develops a scale model of their metropolis, and writes an essay about their expereince. Our members are serving as mentors for five local schools, providing engineering expertise to assist the students.

Our participants include:

  • Nathan Clark (Clawson Middle School)
  • Ed Dryer/Lu-Ling Tu (Bryant Middle School)
  • James Eagan (Birmingham Covington School)
  • Michael Readwin (Smith Middle School)

ASM International Materials Camp

Comments from Paul Schmidt, Saginaw Valley Chapter's student:

While at Materials Camp 2000 at ASM International Headquarters I had a great time, and met a lot of new friends. The first day there we had a couple of lectures. One was on "Fun in Metals" by Dr. Robert Pond Jr., in which we learned, or in some cases reviewed the properties of metals and the stacking patterns of atoms in there BCC, FCC, and HCP state. The second was "Why Stuff Falls Apart" by M.R. Louthan Jr, in which we learned the Six Fundamental Causes of Failure. They are very important in Failure Analysis, which is what the main focus of the camp. After the lectures and lunch we headed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We took a behind the scenes tour of the structure of the building and the making of backdrops for each exhibit. After the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame we took a tour of Brown stadium. We then went to Jacobs Field and watched the Cleveland Indians beat the Texas Rangers.

The Second day we were all assigned to a team and a failure. My team was given a section of pipe from a fire protection distribution system with a 9-inch fish mouth split in it, and our job was to find out why the pipe gave way to 80 psi of stagnant water. After two days of research our team came to the conclusion that Galvanic Corrosion weakened the pipe wall. The fourth day was dedicated to putting together a presentation telling the ASM Trustees Board why the failure occurred and what recommendations as to what can be done to change the situation so the part won't fail again. At the end of the day we went to Six Flags over Ohio amusement park. The next morning all the teams finalized their presentations and then we were off to present our materials to the Trustees Board. All of the presentations went great. After that we headed back to ASM International Headquarters to graduate from camp. The reception for the graduates was great because the campers were able to interact with engineers from their chapters and other chapters around North America. It was great just to talk to them and to learn a couple of secrets along the way. Graduation was the last of Camp, and the next day we all said our good byes and headed home.

Building Cost Effective, High Performance Powertrain Components

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. / Reception: 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Today’s highly competitive automotive market presents many business and technical challenges to engineers. Technical collaboration among engineering functions is essential to meet these challenges and achieve continuous improvement in materials, processes and products. Companies must address the demand for higher output powertrains, increased technological content, fuel economy, quality, reliability, and durability issues in order to bring low cost and high performance products to the market.

SAE Detroit Section and the Detroit Chapter of ASM International have combined resources to offer attendees insight into views and approaches taken by local companies to balance cost and performance in their powertrain components and systems. Design, process, materials, and manufacturing engineers should not miss this opportunity to learn why heat treating is essential to improving the performance capabilities of many powertrain components. Eight speakers will discuss a wide range of techniques, knowledge and interactions in heat treating, part design, manufacturing processing, and process optimization that will support attendee decision making on the job.

The session begins with a focus on the importance of technical collaboration and will close with an opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with many of the speakers. There will be a reception immediately after to continue informal dialogue with speakers, attendees and session organizers.
