The John H. Shoemaker Award was established by the Detroit Chapter of the ASM in 1973 and is intended to recognize profession-related contributions by an executive Metallurgist.
John H. Shoemaker, a distinguished leader and Fellow of ASM International, was the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Kolene Corporation. His dedication to the advancement of research, product and process development, was exemplified by his international reputation as an Executive and Engineering Administrator.
In tribute to this pioneer, a selection is made annually of a member who exhibits outstanding leadership qualities and ethics in his support of the profession.
The recipient, selected by the Chapter Executive Committee and endorsed by at least three Fellows of the Society, shall be from manufacturing, research, development, and materials or process control environments.

The ASM Young Member Award is intended to recognize and encourage young members of ASM, within the Chapter, regardless of the nature of their education, their current position, or their field of activity. The award is presented to a member demonstrating high character and ethics in his actions and has promoted the field of materials or metallurgy in some manner.
